But when I was in Iran, it seemed to me what the propaganda apparatus of the government (i.e. IRI TV) tries to do is to create a sense of Islamo-nationalist feeling among the population. On one hand they bombard the audience with propagandistic rhetoric, but on the other hand they try to pay no attention to the ancient empire. So this phenomenon that you mentioned should be something new.
As for preserving the pasts, I think it's also important and not just for tourism. Just imagine if a government decides to bulldoze all the historic sites. I think something valuable will be lost forever.Mohammad - محمدhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10804472542162118259noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9545615.post-89969604947578989832007-03-26T12:04:00.000-04:002007-03-26T12:04:00.000-04:00During the last few weeks two things from the TV (...During the last few weeks two things from the TV (news) made me really laugh.
One was the way BBC was handling the Zimbabwe issue - the way they bleat about Mugabe etc (considering that the English have lost a lot in that country because of him).
Another was IRI TV complaining about the movie 300 and also glorifying the pre-Islamic Persian Empire.

Anyhow, I am really interested to know your view, on why a state should spend money on preserving these kinds of historical remains. Unless a tourist company does that, because it would be business for them. My feeling is that more money is spent on these things than on preserving nature parks and ecosystems, which are far more essential. Don't you think?Zaffroonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04700038978285292113noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9545615.post-55176720731883743752007-03-24T10:41:00.000-04:002007-03-24T10:41:00.000-04:00One thing we have to give them is that they have c...One thing we have to give them is that they have certainly put Iran on the map. When I came to Canada in the early '70s, I told someone, in answer to his question about my nationality, that I was "Iranian." He said: "What? Uranian?" -- having apparently never heard of the country. I guess "Persian" is better than "Uranian," anyway. I just hope they don't have it wiped off the map now...

--AlirezaAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
