I’m not surprised that only a few people showed up to protest at the consulate, considering the large Pakistani population in Toronto. A protest by the "keraavaati" class is a new phenomenon and cannot be popular amongst the general population. Bhutto tries to give it a popular look, but she belongs to the same class as the lawyers. Pakistan is a dictatorship, it’s always been. So why people should protest against these so-called “emergency measures”? Was it a democracy before and now because of these measures, it’s not any more?Mohammad - محمدhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10804472542162118259noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9545615.post-66497924050348060672007-11-08T23:38:00.000-05:002007-11-08T23:38:00.000-05:00As far as I know, the educated middle class in Pak...As far as I know, the educated middle class in Pakistan are not properly presented in the political scene of Pakistan. Lawyers and other professionals truely demand democracy but they don't consider Bhutto as their saviour. Bhutto's base is among the rural uneducated but not religiously extremist people, and she is as corrupt as Nawaz Sharif and as dictator as Musharraf.
Read more at my blog:
http://e-diasporan.blogspot.com/2007/11/sad-days-for-pakistan.htmlSaeedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18020730966718526096noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9545615.post-12481236429800861282007-11-06T23:40:00.000-05:002007-11-06T23:40:00.000-05:00Hi Niki, You might be right. As for Bhutto, I think it’s very strange that the whole media thing has decided to forget about her shady past and portray her as Ms Democracy/Rule of Law. I just thought it was funny the most despicable segment of the society (any society) leads this protest and the fundamentalist segment who one might have thought would like to see him go, has decided to stay away. One reporter was saying their suits and ties have become a symbol of this uprising! Isn't that hilarious? Suits of the world unite!Mohammad - محمدhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10804472542162118259noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9545615.post-70278220559452873502007-11-06T20:42:00.000-05:002007-11-06T20:42:00.000-05:00I'm not sure if I agree with you analysis here, bu...I'm not sure if I agree with you analysis here, but partially because it is hard to tell what is going on in Pakistan given the way the press is covering it. The US press has been shallow and unhelpful as usual, and i haven't even seen any coverage or analysis in the Iranian press.

I also am not sure about whether they prefer Bhutto to Musharraf. If Musharraf falls, all hell will break loose, and I don't think Bhutto will be able to contain it. The US needs a strong man dictator like Musharraf to contain the rise of Qaeda type fundamentalists in the country (not that he has done such a great job of that, but he can still do better than Bhutto)Nikihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03740828571945291678noreply@blogger.com
